This past winter I photographed my first high school production, and I couldn’t have asked for a more joyful introduction. Mary Poppins at Glen Waverley Secondary College was bursting with colour, talent, and energy from start to finish. The students’ enthusiasm filled the stage — and the auditorium — in the best way.

I loved how every scene came alive through its bright costumes and vivid lighting. The sets were wonderfully detailed, and the young cast gave it everything they had. Photographing the show was as rewarding as it was challenging — I had to anticipate where the action would unfold, often without knowing what would happen next. The constantly changing lights kept me on my toes, but they also made for some beautifully atmospheric shots.

It was a privilege to capture the creativity and teamwork behind this production. Each performer, designer, and dancer contributed something special to the story. The Lyrebird nominations have just been released and this production was nominated in seven categories! Below are some photos celebrating these nominations. All of the following were recognised in the Youth Musical Under $40K category.
Outstanding Student Design Achievement
Two design nominations were awarded for their creative work on the set and visual elements of the show.
Lilly Moore and Elaine Hu crafted stunning details that helped transform the stage into Mary Poppins’ world — full of charm and imagination. Margarita Derzotis also received recognition for her exceptional design contributions, bringing a unique artistic vision that tied the whole production together beautifully.

Outstanding Dancer
Emily Prajogo delivered an incredible performance as Valentine, a doll that came to life in the Bank children’s nursery. Every movement was incredibly expressive. This was a joy to capture through the lens.

Best Cameo Performer
Pratti Sarker as the Bird Woman created touching and moving moments in the show. Her gentle voice and movements brought a welcomed change to the upbeat rhythm of previous scenes and brought real warmth and emotion — a reminder of how small moments can make a big impact.

Best Acting Partnership
Flynn Bartlett and Luella Clarke as Bert and Mary Poppins shared wonderful chemistry on stage. Their partnership captured the spirit of fun, friendship, and magic that makes this story so beloved.

Outstanding Dance Number – Step in Time
This number was pure energy! The choreography, rhythm, and coordination were incredible to watch (and photograph). It’s one of those sequences where you can feel the whole cast working as one.

Outstanding Female Supporting Role
Yeva Bilyachat as Jane brought so much heart to her role. Her youthful energy, expressions, and timing made her performance shine — she was a delight to photograph.

Photographing Mary Poppins was a wonderful reminder of why I love capturing young people doing what they love. The enthusiasm and pride onstage were infectious.

Did you know, I specialised in photoshoot experiences specifically with teens and young people? Every shoot I do is designed to be more than a photoshoot — it’s an experience. A chance for them to see themselves differently, to feel confident, to be seen and heard in a way that feels real. The photos that come from that are beautiful, but they’re also meaningful — because they’re born from connection
